Grief Work
Paula's intuitive insights combined with a vast knowledge of the grief process, makes working with her effective and powerful. "The grief work you do can make all the difference as to whether loss leads to an expansive, growth-enhancing process, or whether it becomes a devastation that leaves you a monument to despair," says Paula.
She uses the tools of Energy Psychology to help grievers achieve a level of comfort that allows them to reconcile their grief issues far more rapidly than was formerly possible. These tools relieve the anxiety, despair, isolation and hopelessness that is debilitating and paralyzing. Once this has been achieved, the grieving person is able to do the work and processing that will bring deep, lasting healing.
Paula's academic training includes studies at Loyola Marymount University, where she became a certified grief-counseling specialist. Grief became the central focus of her work, because it is so critical an issue in addictive, dysfunctional behavior.
Paula believes that grievers are a misunderstood population for whom there has been little awareness or support in our society. Paula often says, "Grief doesn't have to be a life sentence, but few grievers know that."
While serving as director of outreach programs for the Grief Recovery Institute, Paula started the first weekly grief recovery support groups in the San Gabriel and San Fernando Valleys. She then developed a private practice and launched her own grief support programs called Beyond Loss. Over the years, they have helped hundreds of people, many of whom are recovering alcoholics and addicts.
In addition, she conducted grief workshops and trainings for nurses, social workers, and therapists that focused on giving these professionals skills that enable them to work with grieving people. Paula also developed a specialty program for teachers and school personnel called "Kids 'N' Crisis," which empowered them to deal effectively with the emotional impact of loss and crisis on children.
Paula does grief counseling both in-person and in phone sessions. She also conducts an ongoing grief support group called Tears to Triumph at Seaside Center for Spiritual Living. This group is open to everyone.
